The Bugabees: Friends With Food Allergies

Product Description
A whimsical tale of eight friends with food allergies. Food allergies are never fun, but best friends always are! This light-hearted story explores the daily routines of eight best buggy friends such as Beetle, Cricket and Butterfly, as they face their respective food allergies with positivity and poise.

At home and at school, at the park, or on the beach, BugaBees find ways to stay safe, have fun, and remember that the joy of friendship is far sweeter than any food they can, or in some cases, can’t have.

With captivating illustrations and clever rhyming verse, this fun and fanciful tale teaches children to be happy and healthy in spite of a food allergy diagnosis.

While a child could be allergic to any food, BugaBee characters are based on the eight foods that account for 90 percent of all allergic reactions: peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk, soy, eggs and wheat.

The BugaBees: Friends with Food Allergies brings fresh optimism and fun to children dealing with the everyday challenges of managing a food allergy. Additional activities and talking points in the back of the book inspire further learning and teaching opportunities for young children and their caregivers.

It’s a story of eight bugs that do nothing but eat and since all them are allergic to different foods there is always one not eating and repeating “I can have fun anyway” mantra instead. In my view, this approach is wrong - even my almost three year old wouldn’t buy it. So the story is pessimistic, even somewhat depressing, not something I would read to my child but I do alternate it and use the illustrations to create new stories, which makes the book not completely useless.

We’ve needed a book like this in my school library for some time. Finally- an informative and gentle book that appropriately handles the sensitive, yet prevalent topic of food allergies. Even children who don’t have food allergies really enjoy the illustrations and learn from the text. This is a really popular book in my classroom. It’s a must for any school, daycare, Dr.’s office or family with food allergies! A+++

My kids and I love this book! The rhyming text and colorful pictures make for a great story-time read. The simple story addresses the serious issue of children’s food allergies (all 8 of which are covered!), but in a fun way that promotes understanding, and offers ideas for alternative foods and activities. Any parent who has struggled with finding a positive message for their affected child will not only find this book helpful, but love how beautiful it is.

I would love to read this with our little boy who has severe food allergies! I am sure it would help for him to know that there is a support system and that he is not alone with this. He has been through so much with so many allergens, intolerances and severe eczema. We tried meds, creams and allergists to help and nothing could. Fortunately his skin and intolerances are so much better now that he has been taking Belly Boost children’s chewable probiotic for over a year now. He looks and feels great - but we do still carry an Epi-Pen and are always careful and avoid his allergens. Would love to find this book! Thanks everyone :)
